Mustafa’s family couldn’t afford books so he spent his weekends at the Nguuni Education Centre where he could read to his heart’s content. And then he heard about a bird club and decided to take a look. A passion for nature was born and he took to the Haller environmental workshops to learn more.
Mustafa encouraged his school and neighbourhood friends to join him at the bird club and also formed a revision group at the Centre in preparation for their class eight examinations.
Six years later, as Mustafa approaches the end of his studies, he has already become a leader in his community. Dedicated to preserving the land, he runs regular clean ups and waste management programmes and teaches new members of the bird club about the importance of nature.
