Elevating Female Farmers: Driving Change Across Sub-Saharan Africa

Across sub-Saharan Africa, women perform up to 60% of all agricultural labour. Yet, female farmers remain marginalized, with their contributions often overlooked or undervalued. Recognizing and supporting their role in agriculture is essential—not just for gender equality but for broader economic and social progress across the continent.

When women’s agricultural productivity increases, household incomes rise by 20-30%, leading to better nutrition, improved healthcare, and greater educational opportunities for children. These benefits create a ripple effect, empowering future generations to break cycles of poverty and build resilient communities.

Empowering Women Through Agriculture

At Haller, we are committed to equipping female farmers with the knowledge and resources they need to build sustainable agricultural practices, adapt to climate change, and improve their economic independence. Women make up 80% of the farmers who attend our training sessions, where they learn practical techniques to address climate-driven challenges and protect the natural resources they depend on.

Beyond agricultural training, we provide holistic support to rural women. Over the past year:

  • 448 women received healthcare support through our health outreach program.

  • 415 women participated in family planning sessions, giving them greater autonomy over their reproductive health.

  • Through our partnership with the Samburu Girls Foundation, we have provided a safe space for survivors of FGM, helping them rebuild their lives and advocate for change within their communities.

Our team in Kenya is small but mighty. On International Women’s Day, we want to celebrate not only our work but also the incredible efforts of other organizations uplifting female farmers across Africa.

OneVillage Partners: Amplifying Female Farmers in Sierra Leone

The Nurturing Opportunities for Women (NOW) program helps female farmers achieve financial independence, gain leadership skills, and improve agricultural practices. With 100% of graduates increasing their earned incomes and business revenues, and a 400% increase in women speaking up in community meetings, the program is successfully elevating female voices and opportunities.

SASAS: Strengthening Agriculture in Sudan

In Kassala State, SASAS - Sustainable Agrifood Systems Approach for Sudan has partnered with the El-Haram Agricultural Cooperative to train female farmers in land preparation and management techniques. This initiative has diversified food production in the region, which is critical as malnutrition rates rise.

The Harvest Fund: Unlocking Female Farmers’ Potential in Zambia

The EmpowHER Academy in Zambia helps female farmers develop skills for micro-enterprises as a sustainable path out of poverty. Some participants have doubled their incomes and invested in solar power for electricity generation, showcasing the long-term impact of the program.

CIMMYT: Transforming Female Farmers’ Lives in Pembar Island

CIMMYT projects provide seed kits and training to female farmers, increasing food diversity and creating new income streams. Women learn how to produce and sell seeds to other farmers, helping to strengthen local food systems and financial independence.

Equality in Tourism International: Connecting Female Farmers to Hotels in Tanzania

In collaboration with Kilimanjaro Women’s Information and Education Community Organisation, this initiative links female farmers with hotels, enabling them to sell their produce directly. By reducing environmental impacts from long supply chains and securing stable income streams, the project enhances food security and strengthens rural economies.
