A Tribute to Dr. Joseph Macharia
It is with great sadness that we say farewell to Dr. Joseph Macharia, a deeply valued Trustee of Haller and a visionary in environmental stewardship and climate resilience.
Throughout his years with us, Joseph freely shared his guidance, expertise, and passion, especially as we explored the possibilities of carbon offsetting and sustainable carbon projects.
Joseph dedicated his life to empowering smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa, always committed to improving soil health, crop yields, biodiversity, and food security. With over a decade of experience, he was a leading advocate for Nature-Based Solutions to achieve net zero emissions, and he played a pivotal role in enabling farmers to benefit from income generated through carbon credits. His contributions to agriculture and climate change have left an indelible mark on countless communities, guiding initiatives to support resilience and sustainability in the face of a changing climate.
Through his work with One Acre Fund, the World Bank, AGRA, ASARECA, ECOM Trading, Africa Plant Nutrition Institute, and the Africa Conservation and Tillage Network, Joseph's impact extended well beyond any single project or organization. His legacy will continue to inspire us and will live on in the resilience and prosperity of the farmers and landscapes he served.
Our thoughts are with Joseph’s family and loved ones during this time. We honour his memory and are profoundly grateful for his enduring contributions to Haller.
Rest in peace, Joseph.
