We are delighted to share that Nguuni Nature Sanctuary, a core operation of The Haller Foundation’s operations in Kenya, has been nominated for the World’s Leading Sustainable Education & Training Programme in the World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards!
Nguuni Nature Sanctuary is a flourishing hub of agricultural learning and research. Through the Nguuni Nature Sanctuary, The Haller Foundation is able to carry out important wildlife conservation research, showcase human-animal wildlife conflict management techniques, provide farming education facilities to local smallholders and young people, and deliver healthcare services via its Health Clinic.
This nomination underscores the sanctuary's exceptional commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement at every level of its operations, acknowledging the sanctuary as a beacon of sustainable tourism globally.
Commitment to Conservation and Community
Nguuni Nature Sanctuary's nomination is a testament to its unwavering dedication to conserving Kenya's rich biodiversity and helping its surrounding communities to lift themselves out of poverty.
The sanctuary welcomes over 13,000 tourists every year to visit its variety of wildlife, including giraffes and 150+ bird species who thrive in a protected and carefully managed ecosystem. Giving tourists the opportunity to learn from its diverse wildlife, it re-invests the profits from tourism into the local community through an Education Centre which offers climate awareness training and workshops. Nguuni Nature Sanctuary maintains a balance between tourism and conservation, keeping its values of ecology and economy at the core of all of its operations.
Beyond its environmental efforts, Nguuni plays a pivotal role in supporting local communities. Through various educational programs held at its entirely solar-powered Education Centre, the sanctuary uses its profits to teach locals how to create a sustainable and profitable farm via conservation workshops, agricultural programmes and school visits. Its Health Clinic has also delivered over 91,000 treatments to local community members, ensuring access to basic healthcare such as vaccinations and family-planning services.
