Laying the foundations of working with nature.
Water Security
During the initial phase of the Haller Journey, we work with impoverished communities to provide water security, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) creating suitable conditions for smallholder farming.
Haller conducts a geological survey to site all the water projects appropriately. This ensures that the dam is in an appropriate catchment area, the well is sited to access the local water table and the eco-loo is placed to avoid run-off contaminating groundwater surfaces. The work is overseen by Haller and the community are paid for every cubic metre of earth they remove, which is typically reinvested into the purchase of farming materials.
Once the WASH Projects have been completed, communities will have water available for drinking, irrigation and eco-sanitary facilities. Women will not have to spend hours walking in search of drinking water, instead, they are able to tend to the community plots, and children are free from water collection duties to attend school.
We have now constructed 53 wells, 47 eco-loos and 54 rain-fed dams across 54 communities.
The impact of Dams
The first stage of this process is the digging of rain-fed dams by the community. Haller pays individuals to carry out the work, ensuring a sense of ownership. The dams capture and retain rainwater that would otherwise be lost. That water is then used to rehabilitate the land, water crops in nearby plots and increase food production.
The impact of Fish
A valuable source of protein and income. We show community members how to keep them in dams and how to look after them, even when faced with drought.
The impact of Wells
Wells tap into the water table and ensure people have access to drinking water all year round, even in times of drought.
Easy access to water increases food production, improves health and reduces time-poverty, particularly for women. It is the basis for better lives.
The impact of Bio-loos
Our bio-loos are an effective, low-tech way of preventing contamination of the water sources we put in place, encouraging basic hygiene practices and improving health.
