Over 20 years, the challenges facing the smallholder communities Haller was set up to serve have shifted and evolved. But our approach remains rooted in a mission to bring together ecology and economy.

Dr Rene Haller is featured in ‘102 Holes in the Ground’, a new book providing case studies of repurposing mine sites and rejuvenating mining communities by rebuilding ecological integrity and enhancing livelihoods.

Clean energy sourcing has formed an imperative part of Haller’s mission to assist rural Kenyan communities. The introduction of GravityLights provides a self-sustainable lighting system for the communities that Haller works with.

Haller has teamed up with Gravity Light Foundation to trial sustainable lighting in Haller communities. Gravity Light Foundation Commercial Director, Caroline Angus and Haller CEO Alia Malik met in London through social enterprise network, On Purpose. Haller projects in Kenya include a renewable energy component and methods have been trialled from biogas to solar charging stations. But Haller still had not found a durable low cost technology that would fit its communities.
